Because of the rain, it's late in the day, and we are hours behind schedule we decided to visit the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest on the return trip. Besides, there's no access on this road anymore. This was the old route.

The Painted Desert Trading Post. This land adjoins the Painted Desert and is now for sale. At one time this was the only route from the east into the Painted Desert and the tourists must have kept this place busy. That is, until the interstate.

The dirt turned to gravel.
